Principal Mechanical Engineer

The Principal Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing HVAC, plumbing and mechanical control systems according to client specifications and safety standards, preparing and reviewing system drawings, overseeing the installation of HVAC systems, performing, and supervising maintenance procedures, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The facilities mechanical engineer is a key member of a multi-discipline team of engineering staff producing project design packages of drawings, specifications, and calculations.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead mechanical engineer and often project manager on assigned projects from proposal development, requirement development to final commissioning stage.
  • Plan, perform, and coordinate detailed phases of HVAC and Plumbing design work with calculations, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, layout of mechanical equipment and associated duct and piping systems, and sequences of operations.
  • Design of HVAC systems from concept to construction, including calculating heating and cooling needs, selecting appropriate equipment, detailing system specifications, design drawings,
  • Develop mechanical construction and equipment specifications, test and inspection plans, and system design descriptions.
  • Develop Basis of Design Philosophy.
  • Develop design specifications.
  • Develop Facilities Requirements Definitions.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during construction phases.
  • Analyze, design, and optimize HVAC and mechanical systems for various construction projects.
  • Conduct system calculations and simulations using advanced software.
  • Provide quality control during integration of mechanical systems.
  • Support for on-site integration support.
  • Generation of bills of material, and modification of standard assemblies as required to satisfy the application.
  • Work with commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation and performance HVAC and other mechanical systems.
  • Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations, mechanical systems audits and start-up as needed.
  • Experience collaborating with other disciplines and external partners – General contractors or architects to create a construction document set.
  • Work with local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Produce project design packages of drawings, specifications, and calculations as part of a multi-discipline design team.
  •  Support new project proposals with mechanical discipline scopes, budget estimates, and schedules.

Required Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

Required Experience:

  • Previous experience in mechanical system engineering and government facilities mechanical design.
  • Professional engineering (PE) License required.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of Mechanical (HVAC) engineering experience.
  • Proven experience in the HVAC and mechanical construction industry.
  • Expertise with mechanical design standards, and detailed understanding of related codes/standards. e.g.; NAVFAC Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) & Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS), NFPA (70, 101) and a working knowledge of ASHRAE and SMACNA standards.
  • Understanding of the A&E design process and providing oversite of engineering design
    packages.
  • Interpreting customer specification requirements.
  • Have the ability to research new designs, technologies and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
  • Proven leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven Project Management skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently with little direction or supervision.
  • AutoCAD experience is required.
  • Expertise with Direct Digital Controls (DDC) systems \
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with project team members, other engineering disciplines, clients, and government personnel.

Desired Experience: 

  • Overseas design experience in austere conditions, corrosive environments, high humidity or desert conditions is desired.
  • Experience with SpecsIntact for specification development is highly desired.
  • PMP certification
  • REVIT experience is desired.

Security Clearance Statement: This position requires a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration.
